Research Seminar: Mapping open innovation across organisations

Tuesday, 13 March 2012
14:00 - 17:00
The Work Foundation, 21 Palmer Street, London, SW1H 0AD

This research seminar comes as part of the Big Innovation Centre’s cutting edge programme of work which examines the different approaches to Open Innovation used by the Big Innovation Centre’s corporate partners, exploring what good practice is and identifying barriers, enablers and policy changes.

Many companies talk of a commitment towards Open Innovation, but it is not clear whether they all fully exploiting its potential in their businesses. Some organisations are focused on collaboration and sharing of IP and expertise, others are more concerned with outsourcing innovation to smaller companies or universities.

This interactive seminar tested the initial research findings, and will hone in on practical examples of both success and lessons learned, looking at the factors that help or impede Open Innovation.

Key research questions:

1. Are there some approaches to Open Innovation that work better than others?

2. What are the key barriers to Open Innovation that companies face?

3. Is there anything that government, or other players in the innovation system can do to make Open Innovation work better?

4. What are the roles of SMEs and universities in Open Innovation?
